I am not sure this book is for me. Aside from the dreariness and the exploration of mining life, I tend to shy away from blatantly political reads. Your review made me realize that this book probably wouldn't make a good read for me. Great review!

I loved both Therese Raquin and The Ladies Paradise, but it sounds like this one has a much heavier, more political tone. Zola is becoming a favorite, and I do plan to give this one a try... eentually.

I think you're reaction is similar to mine (THE MASTERPIECE)-- not a favorite book and one you "forced" yourself to finish, but one that haunts you! I do think I need to give more Zola a try. He has an important historical place in the literary cannon.

This is one of my favourite all-time novels. It's a story that needed to be told-rough as it may be to read. And I think it's still relevant in showing what poverty and lack of education or opportunity really means in the lives of those living it. You can probably tell that I like my fiction to be meaningful.:) And of course it's a classic in historical fiction now too. Glad you stuck with it. Thanks for reviewing an oldie but goodie.

I kind of want to read this book, even if it does sound dreary. I loved Zola's writing style in Nana and want to read more of his work.
