I have been on a bit of a Gaskell kick and am in the middle of Cranford as we speak. I also read Wives and Daughters and am planning on reading North and South. It sounds like this book would fit right in to my reading pattern, but I will try to remember some of the opinions you have passed on while reading it. I really liked this review and found your opinions on the book extremely insightful.

I enjoyed your review and will definitely try this at some point. I had not participated in an online book tour until this one, and it was fun to read all the other participants' blogs.

I've never read any Gaskell, but plan to try North and South next year. Since the story is not compelling, I'll pass on this one. I do have a short story of hers though.

I HATE it when female Victorian characters are like that. I think I'll avoid this book if possible. ;)

I think a lot of Victorian writers- especially the female ones- were really obsessed with the ideal demure woman. It's unfortunate as the characters can seem very one-dimensional that way. I'm enjoying watching Cranford on PBS, though!

The social commentary aspect of the book sounds interesting to me. It's great when a classic is as readable as this one sounds.
