Sorry that this one didn't work for you. I can completely your feelings of disconnection. It's often hard for me to enjoy a book if I don't like the main character as well. I enjoyed The Boat to Redemption, but it was a bit strange! I thought it was a good insight into the lives of the Chinese boat people and I loved all their mythology. I didn't like Dongliang much either, but for me I I found their attitudes fascinating and it didn't really matter that I didn't fully connect with the characters.
