I've read the first book, but not the second. I can appreciate what you say about the first book though. To me it seemed a little slight and insubstantial and I didn't have a huge emotional connection to the book. It sounds as though I might feel differently about the second book, so I am going to try that one. I'm glad that you finally read this one, but I'm sorry that reading the back cover spoiled the book for you!

While I did love the first book, I actually liked the second one even more! It was so wonderful to get to see her finally visiting the places she'd read about all her life.

Well, I actually did love 84 Charing Cross Road. In fact, I loved it so much that I immediately checked out The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street and found that I enjoyed that one even more! I have been able to find both books at used bookstore and plan to re-read them several more times.

84 Charing Cross Road has been on my list for such a long time! I don't have a copy of it yet - I should try to get one with both books in it, too. I too love novels about places and history (as long as the events don't actually take place DURING the history!).

"and DON’T read the back cover!"

Good to know, because if the cover doesn't strike my fancy, the book descriptiin better. Great review and I'm sure if Iever make to Englad someday I would act just the same as you: amazed at seeing history come to life.

I have wanted to read Hanff since she was featured in Rosie's Riveters on my blog! I hate when a book doesn't live up to the hype. It happened to me with Graceling. Oh well- it's ok :-) There are others!

I'm glad you mentioned liking the second book more-I'll be sure to grab it when I read the first one.
I'm still surprised every time I don't like a well-loved book as well. Oh well, diversity is what makes us interesting, right? :)

Shame you didn't love '84 Charing Cross Road' but I agree 'Duchess' is the better book. I think maybe it's the direct voice, which reads differently than the correspondence does.
