Too bad this one wasn’t quite as good — it’s hard when you get one great book in your head and constantly compare. I do love the cover of this one though, it’s beautiful!

I have also read The Poisonwood Bible several times, and I just bought this book a few weeks ago. Since then, I have seen some very tepid reviews and have pushed it back in the stack. I am still interested, but not on fire like I was before. Very solid and interesting review. Thanks for the honesty.

I love the cover of this book and the story-line sounds interesting but your point about The Poisonwood Bible makes me pause because that book was fantastic! It seem ludicrous to try and even walk in its shadow. The other troubling thing for me is that you found the characters self-absorbed and difficult to relate to. That’s a real problem for me, particularly since they aren’t fully-developed either!

I really appreciate the honesty of your review. I’m not sure if I’ll read this book, that’s something I need to consider!

I do find that longer books accomplish a better character study.
