I really enjoy cooking and really love going to the farmers' market each week but I often am struck by the fact that I would not know most nuts or vegetables in their natural habitats. What if I am ever forced to forage? It could end really badly. I've had this book on my radar. Thanks for the review.

I love cooking but like you I can be a bit sporadic about how much I actually do it. This book sounds like a really interesting and rather inspirational read. You obviously wouldn't have to take things as far as Pollan but reading what he did sounds like it can be encouraging to do what you can do at home.

I'm always sort of skittish about Michael Pollan, even though I enjoyed The Botany of Desire quite a bit. I think maybe it's my distaste for books that tell me how I *should* be eating? (And make me feel bad if I am not eating that way.) But this book sounds fascinating, and I like this sort of everyday history - and it doesn't get a lot more everyday than cooking and eating.

Also, making bread is not as scary or as intimidating, or even really as time-consuming, as it might seem. If I can manage a passable loaf of bread, so can you!
