This does sound good, and like something different from my normal reads. I really liked your review and think that I am definitely going to check out this book. Your description of “grim, violent and stinky” really intrigues me. Great review!

This sounds like a great story, but I don’t know… I kind of like my historical fiction to be romanticized, in all honesty. I might give it a try, though.

I so agree, it did feel more real, and dirty. not just a bunch of nicely dressed people in castles

I like when I get an accurate portrayal of what these times were really like. A lot of the time when I read historicals there isn’t a lot of mention of how grim and dirt things really were.

I think you’re right that a lot of historical fiction does romanticize the period it’s written about. This one sounds great – I love the fact that it’s told from different time periods by the same narrator.
