Actually, Geisha and Prostitutes are different. The Mizuage are only traditions of a courtesan(high level prostitutes). Geisha only entertain, it depends on their choice to lose their virginity or not.The character Gei means art and sha means person/people; basically Geisha are only artists/entertainers,they sell their art not their bodies. The thing about men being allowed in the okiya is because the kimono and obi are heavy, usually men are the ones that dress them or the geisha has a lover, etc.(Only some men are allowed, since it's her nephew I think he is allowed in the okiya)

Years ago my book club read Memoirs of a Geisha and we discussed the controversy that surrounded it. I always wanted to go back and read this book to compare but like you I never got around to it. I really enjoyed your review though!

I love Memoirs of a Geisha, and I tried to read this shortly after I read that one and just couldn't get through it. This was all while I lived in Japan, and so I proceeded to try to get my hands on every geisha book I could.

Some things, for example, like a geisha's virginity being auctioned to the highest bidder is something I think Iwasaki refuted but Liza Dalby wrote about briefly in her book Geisha. (which you might find interesting, she's a North American woman who lived with and "became a geisha")

Another book I really recommend is Autobiography of a Geisha. Kyoto geisha were always the privileged ones, so to say, but there were women who entertained all over the country and were much more like prostitutes. This book is about one of them, and it's absolutely heartbreaking, but a great read, usually the one I recommend as a follow-up to Memoirs of a Geisha.

Oh my, this does sound fascinating! I love to read about Geisha's and have a book on my shelf called Geisha, A Life. If you haven't read that one, I think that you would like it. I think what excites me the most about this book is the fact that it is packed with all the little details that make the story memorable. I am going to have to grab a copy of this book and give it a try. Great review!
