I first read this series when I was spending a summer flat on my back with Mono – Ever since it has been the standard of historical fiction that i measure other books by. Whenever I need to just get lost in a book – I pull it out and start the saga all over again!!! It has been 30 years since my first reading, but I still enjoy their stories and the history of the period. It should be required reading for Eng. Lit. !!!

I loved this one, too! It did have sections that were a little slow for me, the same ones that bogged you down. But I think that those passages are the ones that would make this book as loved by men as by women who like the family/romance bits. Can't wait to read the rest of the series! Wow! I know very little about Victorian England so this sounds like a book I would enjoy. I do think many soldiers get sick of fighting.
