Oh I loved loved loved this book. Blubbed my heart out. You hit it on the nose…young people being confronted with their own mortality, and not really knowing what to do next. Beautiful book, great review.

I’ve noticed the same thing at funerals. It’s hard to judge what other people’s true emotions are, though.

I’ve been wanting to try Green’s work for a while. This one sounds like it will make you think on lots of different levels.

I hadn’t heard about this book, but it sounds like something that I could share with my kids. I also have seen that type of reaction to death, and I find it quite strange. It is also a little off-putting when the person doing the crying was not especially close to the deceased. I am glad you chose to talk about that aspect of the book and how it made you feel. Thanks for the very illuminating review.

I have always wanted to read this and your thoughts about people’s reactions to death — especially Americans — has been my experience too. I must move this one up in my list.

I don’t remember the bit about another character getting a sign (although I remember the Colonel telling Miles that Alaska had been his friend for years, while Miles had only known her a short while) but it obviously made a big impression on you. I love that in books different bits will jump out at different people.

Argh is there a spoiler for her death on some covers? I knew it was going to happen going in and I wish I hadn’t because it changes the entire way you read the book.
