Did you read Alison Weir’s biography on Anne Boleyn? I have that one sitting on my shelf anxious to read (I think that is going to be my next read)… I am curious as to what others think of it.

I’ve often found book length non-fiction that should have been a long article instead. Topics like this one, where there really is very little historical record, would be so much better if they could find a way to be 50 pages long.

I love love love historical fiction along with the medieval time and agree with Sam that The Other Boleyn Girl made Mary’s life come to life for me and wanting more. However, I have a very hard time reading Weir’s biographical books – so if you considered it dry, it would probably join the stack of unfinished biographies that seemed like a good idea at the time

Maybe it would have been better as a novel-then she could have made her speculations without having to treat them as more factual than they are.

I’ve had this on my wishlist for a while, ever since reading The Other Boleyn Girl. It sounds like there just wasn’t enough information about Mary to warrant this book, which is a shame.

I have several Weir books on my TBR but I have yet to read her… One day! I am impressed she could write a book about someone with such little information. It’s too bad it didn’t work, but you have to applaud her for trying.

I really appreciated the honesty in this review, as I am currently in the midst of my obsession with the Tudors and thought this might be a good pick. I am a little disappointed that the book is so repetitive, and that Weir takes such license with the Mary’s story. I am currently reading Wolf Hall, and have read about how Mantel describes her, which isn’t much different than what I have heard before. Very nice review today. I think I may avoid this one now that I have read your opinion on it.

Bummer. I like Weir’s biographies but it’s too bad that she tried to make a book out of not much material.

A figure in history I think I (and many others) would really like to know more about, shame this book didn’t quite do it for you.
