This book sounds really interesting, Matilda isn’t really a historial character I know anything about other than who she was married to!

This sounds interesting! The only thing I know about William the Conqueror is what I learned from studying the Bayeux Tapestry.

Kathy & Lorren – I do think it’s very readable for a non-history person. It’s not dry at all. It’s not written as narrative non-fiction, though it does follow Matilda’s life chronologically. As with most biographies of women of this time, it’s a bit difficult to grasp Matilda herself as her words don’t survive, but the book does a very good job with what does exist and does fill in those gaps somewhat.

I have to second Kathy’s question. I have been wanting to learn more about European history lately, a subject I’ve never covered before. I’m not interested in being an expert, just in learning more, so good historical fiction is a really great way for me. But if I don’t know much, is this something that would be feasible for me?

I think I would probably love this one, and had not heard much about it before reading your review. You make it sound very intriguing though, and I am thinking about adding it to my list. I bet it would be a great book to get ensconced with! Fantastic review today!

Do you think this book is readable for non-history people? My mother loves to read about female power, so I think it would be a good book for her.
