Just reading this review brought up so many bad memories. *shudder* I think you're absolutely right that the Inferno Club plot is beyooooond ridiculous. As for Max and Daphne, yeah the relationship was silly. But I don't read Gaelen Foley for silly relationships. Almost all of the romances in her books are intense and believable (in the context of the story, at least), and it was just so... strange.

I'm not sure how much Avon is to blame for the FUBAR that is this book. I know after she finished the last Knight book--the Knight books proper, not the Spice Trilogy--she asked people on her blog if they wanted her to write a dark, serious romance or a light romantic comedy. Then she said she would combine the two. I was thinking it would be a dark comedy, but this... this just does not work.

My favorite Gaelen Foley novel is Lord of Fire, which is super-dark and Gothic and also features a secret society. I was expecting something more along those lines when I started My Wicked Marquis, so I was rather unpleasantly surprised. :(
