I’m currently listening to this one on audio and I’m having a difficult time with it right now. I’m not sure if it’s because I just concluded Kate Morton’s The Distant Hours right before it and loved the narrator, but this one is tough for me to get into. I will keep plugging away with it but so far, Bertha is my favorite character.

Ah,it’s always a risky game to compare new books to old ones. I will sometimes refer to someone else’s writing style but rarely a whole story.

I am glad to see this more balanced review of this book. I had been considering it, but after reading your review, I realize that I might be disappointed that there is not a lot of meat to the story. It does sound like it would fit the bill for some relaxing weekend reading, but not that it would satisfy a craving for something historically complex. Thanks for your honest take on this one!

But her loyalty to Cora often gets in the way. This was actually a really fascinating aspect of the story and had me wondering what ladies’ maids really thought Have you read Lady's Maid by Margaret Forster? It is a novel that explores the relationship between Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her lady's maid, Lily(?) Wilson, from the latter's point of view. It is a thoughtfully paced, involving book, told in fascinating detail. Forster had previously written a biography of the poet and this shows in the richness and nuance of the story.

I have only heard kinda meh things about it but it got loads of hype in the UK and was chosen for the TV Book Club, I swear because of who Goodwin is.
