LOL. I never really pay that much attention to scientific/historical details especially in fictional books. I loved the story and this is one of my all time favorite books. Like S. Krishna I didn't care for the sequel either.

Haha! I enjoyed this book, but as you know, historical inaccuracies don't really bother me. I didn't like the sequel though.

Kather, ine Neville knows, quite a bit about chess. She doesn't know much about science, though she pretends to, and her theories are kind of, well, "woo-woo". I noticed she also, like many people, has a tendency to get a lot of Russian names and dates wrong, and she mixed up the Russian (Julian) calendar used at the time of Catherine the Great, with the more modern Gregorian one. It's a kind of tought slog, and I haven't finished it yet. I may try The Fire, though. It's possible that it's a better book

Oh, I hate it when I get a stinker! The velvet issue would bug me, too. I have both of these books sitting in my pile here, it will be interesting to see if I can enjoy them. I thought The Da Vinci Code was okay, an entertaining story but not worthy of the hysteria that developed around it.
