Although I have not yet finished reading this book, I am really enjoying it and don't actually agree with the previous adverse comments. Perhaps it's because I have Italian ancestors myself and know Venice quite well that I can relate more to the story. My only criticism would be that Leonora is constantly referred to as Corradino's ancestor, while she is actually his descendant. I think the author has done well with her research into glass-blowing and the politics of Venice but she did not check up on her vocabulary as regards family history. I am hoping to enjoy the rest of the book as much as I have done so far. I would recommend it to anyone who loves Italy and knows Venice.

Bummer. I read some of those negative reviews and ended up deciding that there were probably better books out there. Hope your next one is more enjoyable.

Fiorato wrote The Botticelli Secret, too, which didn't really work for me. I think she has good ideas for her books, but she needs a better editor.

I also remember the reviews on this one being tepid at best. It doesn't sound like I would enjoy this book very much, for a host of reasons, but the fact that the characters are not really all that likable or believable is really the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Thanks for your very insightful and honest review. Now I am positive that I am going to pass this one up.
