A novel about a general that downplays combat doesn’t really cut it for me. Battles HAVE blood and gore and there is something basically dishonest about writing about them without it. If you don’t want real battle, I find a better solution is writing about someone who didn’t fight. Being “sophisticated” doesn’t make battle an exercise in intellectualism.

Court treachery plots don’t really do it for me, unfortunately. It would be nice to read a book set in Ancient Rome that doesn’t focus on battles, emperors, and court politics.

I love this period of history, but the info dumping and political machinations might edge me out of my zone while reading this. It is interesting that so much treachery was going on and that the battles were played out without all the blood and gore. I am betting that this is something that my son would like, and from your description and great review, I think I will surprise him with it over the weekend. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one with us.
