I'm not sure if I would like this book based on the characters you've described. Sometimes I really enjoy characters who are unlikeable, but usually in historical fiction, I prefer to have at least a few characters that I like. Great review though!

Fantastic and honest review - and one which I related to as well since I agree the writing is gorgeous, setting wonderful, impecably researched. But I had a little trouble with all the detail and I agree the characters were not wholly engaging or likable.

Hola Meghan, Thanks for your thoughtful review. Yes, I, too, found Maximilian more than a bit infuriating at times (well, a lot of times). Sounds like you definitely would have been on the side of the Juaristas! Kind regards, C.M. Mayo

The writing is amazing. But I think I need a break from books in which it is difficult to relate to the characters. There is enough in the book, however, that I may pick it someday.
