I'm glad this is good, even if you are burned out on the time period. I've got a bit of historical fiction burn out as well, which isn't good because I think I have more historical fiction books awaiting review than ever before - including this one, which showed up unsolicited.

I'm not a big fan of historical fiction. I do like reading about it here though. But I am interested in this period, especially on the crusades. It's interesting to hear you mension how historical fiction can feel dated. I'd never considered that before but I guess the way we view history must have a powerful affect on historical fiction.

This book sounds very complicated. X loves Y, and meanwhile Y loves Z and A is in love with X. Uhg!

I hear professor's voices in my head, too. Like if I'm watching a movie and I see a painting in the background--horrible. Totally derails me.

I don't know much about this period or it's characters, so your review makes the book sound like something that I might like to try. I have found recently that I am a big lover of historical fiction and am always looking for new and unfamiliar periods to read about. Thanks for your unflinchingly honest review. I will be adding this book to my wish list!

I have not read any books set in the medieval period. I think I really need to read something set in those times. This does sound good!

I really try to mix up my time periods so I don't get too burnt out - it's a little hard for the Tudor period since there are so many darn books set during that time that I want to read. I have this book and hope to read it later this year. Thanks for the review!!

I know how you feel about getting over-saturated in a particular period or genre. I think that has happened to me before, too, but with the Georgian era. Suddenly, all the non-fiction I read seemed to reference other books I had already read. Which made me feel smart, but very caged in.
