I finally got around to reading this! I agree completely that Pullinger is an amazing writer. I loved her prose and felt completely engaged with the book while I was reading it. And I loved the details about Egypt Sally gives us; you really feel like you're there and learning about a new culture.

That being said, once I put the book down I had a hard time picking it back up again. I don't know why, but I think it has to do with Sally--she didn't seem like a real character to me, more like just a vehicle for us to learn about Egypt and Lady DG. There's a part of me that thinks maybe this is Lady DG's story and that's where the sense of emotional distance with the characters comes from, but I don't think that's it.

In any case, I would definitely read another of Pullinger's novels. Her ability to evoke historical place and time is amazing.

Thanks for reminding me about this book! I had it out from the library, but didn't get a chance to read it. I have enjoyed a couple other of Pullinger books, so am hopeful I will enjoy this one, too!

Great review. Am definitely going to have to add this to the TBR list. I've been having a hard time with historical fiction this year, too. Everything I've read have ended up being such downers! Hopefully there's a happy ending in my future...
