So glad that you loved this one! I haven’t read Gortner yet, but I think I have one of his on my shelf. I also haven’t read a lot about Isabella, and only know the basics, and of course that she was Katherine’s mother. Your review today was excellent. I really need to read this one!

This sounds like a really interesting read. I find myself fascinated by things like the Inquisition, terrified but also fascinated.

I must admit that for me the cover is a huge turnoff. Isabella of Castille was not a “hearts and flowers” queen who sat around with gentlemen kissing her hand which is kind of what that cover implies you should expect from the book. I wonder how the wars she fought are handled. I’ve never been tempted by it because of the cover, but I may give it a closer look since reading your review.

Fantastic review. I read The Queen’s Vow last year and I agree with all of your assessments of Gortner’s writing. As of yet, I have not been disappointed in any if his work that I have read and I thought he portrayed Isabella beautifully and expertly maneuvered around the harder-to-address issues.

I know several people who love Gortner’s work but I’m hesitant to read that time period. I love that the cover features someone’s face!
