I think the problem with this one is that it's a 'polishing' of a book she wrote really early on, and we've all fallen in love with the Bridgerton Julia Quinn (clearly more developed as a writer). I know I had trouble with this one and with Minx which is also an early Quinn. I actually loved it until the final 50 pages or so when it fell completely to pieces for me with a typical 'trope' version of a cruelly jealous misunderstanding.

Books like this are the reason I have stayed away from the romance genre. I don't have enough information to grab a good one, and I am always afraid they will end up turning out like this one. I'm sorry you had such a hard time with this one, but I enjoyed reading your thoughts. I am also glad that you included the names of a few that are good, because I have always really wanted to dip into romances.

I have a signed copy of this one and yet I still haven't been tempted to read it! I think I am going to have to though because the next book that she is releasing is a sequel to this one.

I'm sorry you didn't like this book. :( It's always disappointing when an author you love writes a bad book. I looked up my review for this book on Amazon, and I actually gave it 4/5 stars... but I have no idea why. I don't remember a word of this book! :P Oh well.

I think this one won't work for me either - everything you wrote about that frustrated you were things that would have made this one a dnf for me. Great review, and since you do like her other books, I think I'll check out one of her other ones.

That's too bad. I know what you mean about holding a book to a higher standard for certain authors though.

I remember being frustrated while reading this one, after enjoying several other of Julia Quinn's books. I didn't remember why, so at least I didn't find it so bad as to be memorable :-).

Thanks for the review.

Thanks for the warning. I'm not a romance fan anyway, so if this one didn't work for you, it would surely not work for me.
