Even though I enjoy watching science fiction films and TV series I hardly ever read science fiction books. I think that is because I have struggled to connect to characters in a lot of science fiction novels which is something really important to me.
I had a similar bias against military sci-fi, even though I've read stuff like The Vorkosigan Saga and the Old Man's War series that should have proved me wrong. (I've also read stuff that proved me right, like the first The Lost Fleet book and Sheepfarmer's Daughter, which is military fantasy, but my point stands.)

But I like Tanya Huff's books (the few that I've read, anyways), and if you say that it's character-focused, I'm in.
