This sounds like an intriguing premise to me, too, but I know what you mean about feeling underwhelmed with a book that sounded like it would be really good. So disappointing.

Like Kathy, I like the premise of the book, but for some reason I haven’t been drawn to read it.

I plan to read this after having read many positive reviews, but I’m glad for your mixed one. I’ll definitely keep what you’ve said about characterisation in mind.

For me, what works so well about Oyeyemi’s work is her writing: She inevitably says at least one thing, and usually she says dozens, that resonate with me utterly. If you didn’t like it in this book, she may not be the writer for you. But if it matters, my favorite of her books is her third, White Is for Witching. It’s spooky and wonderful.
