Sounds really fascinating. I like reimagined scenes, but also like to hear things right from the mouths of people if possible, so I’d like to see how the author handles the balance and if possible why she makes the choices she does when retelling the story. Aww I liked what you had to say about her need for love being linked to her getting divorced so many times – you’re a bit of a romantic right to give such a generous interpretation?

I actually bought this in hardcover when it came out and then never got around to reading it — I love the era and have been curious about her for forever. Thanks for the review — I should look around for my copy and read it over my winter holiday.

I do think it’s really interesting that women who were protected by marriage had more license to act improperly than those women who were not married or who were divorced. These types of things are things that I have been coming across in the books I have been reading lately, and it is always so angering to me and makes me glad to be a woman living in today’s society, and not during those very restrictive times. This is a wonderful review, and I think that the book sounds really interesting and like something that I would like to check out. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on it!

This looks really interesting even if it’s not “perfect”. It does look a little glum, though. I like your analysis of it, though I’m sorry you didn’t quite form that deeper connection.
