As we speak, I’m in the air over the Atlantic Ocean, heading back to the United States for a brief visit. Of course, I don’t entirely get a holiday, as I’m meant to finish my third dissertation chapter before I get back, but it will be nice. Meanwhile, I have to find a way to occupy myself on the flight over. Plane reading is always something I deliberate over. Do I want to bring something light and entertaining, or something a little more difficult since I’m a captive audience with no access to the internet? I tend to bring a variety, although I seem to have gone more in the direction of purely entertaining lately. Here’s what I have with me this time:
- The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough
- The Luxe, Anna Godbersen
- Flint, Margaret Redfern
- Shadow of Colossus, T.L. Higley
What kind of books do you bring with you when you travel? Or do you occupy yourself in other ways?
I tend to bring a mixture of books when I travel to suit any mood I may be in. Traveling itself doesn’t seem to dictate what I want to read–it’s whatever I’m into at that time. I hope you have a safe trip and enjoy your visit home.

For me, it’s usually something towards the light and entertaining end of things, because space being a limited thing, I want to tray and minimise the possibility of bringing something along I can not then, get into.

When I travel, I mostly read and sleep. I like having variety, so I always take 5-6 books in case some turn out to be duds. I hope you’re having a safe and pleasant trip, Meghan!

I’m definitely an airplane reader. I usually take my current read and something light in case there are too many distractions to concentrate.

I would love a vacation that includes lots of reading time!
That didn’t happen this year. We took a family road trip to southern California, and were very, very busy. I knew this would be the case, so I packed light.
Here’s what I brought with me
Good luck with balancing your dissertation with fun on this trip!

Like you, I tend to bring a variety of books. If I’m on a bus or in a car, I’ll bring both light a serious reads, but in a plane I’ll bring mostly light stuff since flying scares me a lot. Last time I brought “Postmortem” by Patricia Cornwell, and even though it’s a mystery, it was really “technical” and I had a hard time concentrating.

…since I’m a captive audience with no access to the internet… OMG! I had a mild panic attack reading that sentence! LOL… okay, maybe I’m a little too addicted to the computer.
Well, travelling by plane would be okay for reading. I can no longer read and ride in anything that you can sense the motion without getting sick (darn vertigo). I think I’d bring a variety of things for that kind of trip. A manga, a serious novel, a light read and maybe a short story book. I’d also bring my MP3 player, as I can’t stand to just sit and read.

I tend to bring longer books with me, and I try to fit in at least one for every day I’ll be away. This is usually overkill, but I figure it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Have a nice trip! I’ll be interested to hear what you think of THE THORN BIRDS, if you end up reading it this time around. It blew me out of the water when I read it a few years back.

When I’m flying, I really just want to pass out and wake up when I get there. =P I get so stressed out about the whole thing I usually can’t read at all. So basically, I have no recommendations. If I took a book at all, it would probably be something random I picked up in the airport.

Have a fun trip! I was glad to see on Twitter that you arrived safetly. When I travel, I like to bring a wide assortment of books, but for the plane ride part of it, I always go light, light and maybe even lighter. Just pure fun stuff, quick and easy reads. I don’t think I would be able to tackle a serious read on the plane!

My ideal combo for flying: audiobook and stack of sudokus. Best way to tune out annoying seat mates. If the movie is good, I may watch.
